The Googong Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre will be a landmark community facility currently in development in the growing township of Googong, NSW. The project, valued at over $31 million, is being developed by Peet and Mirvac, and will be operated by the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council upon completion. The centre is designed to provide high-quality indoor sports and aquatic facilities to support the health and wellbeing of the local community.

Scope of Services
MBC Group was engaged by NBRS to provide BCA and DDA consulting services for the design to tender documentation phases of the project. Our role was to ensure that the facility complies with national regulatory requirements while prioritising accessibility and usability for all members of the community.

Key Project Features
Aquatic Facilities: the centre includes a six-lane, 25-metre indoor pool and a warm water program pool designed for learn-to-swim classes, hydrotherapy, and rehabilitation activities.
Sports Hall: a two-court indoor sports hall will cater to various sporting activities and community events.

Accessibility Focus: the design incorporates best practices in universal access, ensuring compliance with DDA requirements and providing an inclusive environment for people of all abilities.

Future Community Infrastructure: the sports and aquatic centre is part of a broader precinct development, which includes additional playing fields and recreational amenities.

Our Contribution
Throughout the design and documentation phases, MBC Group provided expert guidance on:

1) Ensuring adherence to the NCC requirements for fire safety, structural adequacy, energy efficiency, and egress.
2) Reviewing design plans to ensure accessibility provisions, including ramps, handrails, accessible change rooms, and signage, align with Australian Standards and best practices.
3) Identifying potential compliance risks early in the design phase to minimise costly rework during construction.
4) Working closely with NBRS and other project stakeholders to balance compliance, functionality, and aesthetic considerations.

Outcomes & Impact
By integrating BCA and DDA compliance from the early stages of design, we helped ensure a seamless pathway from design to tender documentation, reducing the risk of non-compliance issues emerging later in the project. Our proactive consulting approach supported NBRS in delivering a design that meets regulatory requirements while prioritising safety, accessibility, and user experience.

Looking Forward
As the Googong Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre moves towards construction, MBC Group remains committed to supporting the project's success by offering ongoing compliance advisory services if required. This project reflects our dedication to contributing to community infrastructure that is both functional and inclusive, reinforcing our position as a trusted consultant in the commercial, recreation, and community development sectors.
